Aikido Kids

At Shodokan Aikido Sydney our kids classes are designed to provide fun games which have a practical application to the broader concepts of Aikido.

Aikido is not a punch and kick style of martial art, so your children are not going to learn how to punch each other from us, they tend to learn this all on their own. Our philosophy begins with getting out of the way or Tai Sabaki. If you get out of the way then any threat is at least momentarily diffused.

A typical class consists of

• basic warm up
• solo exercises designed to teach and learn footwork
• hand blade practices which help teach connection between hand and feet coordination
• partner practices which teach and reinforce distance, timing coordination and connection
• rolling and falling practice and games
• an aikido exercise modified to a junior level

Whilst we would love to imagine each of our students will stick with Aikido and become a senior blackbelt we recognise that the most important things we can impart are the short term goals of improved coordination, recognition of avoidance of an attack, and an improved ability to fall and roll.
